From the
car park drop down the hill to the bridge and take the trail south with the river on your left. Before long the road forks. Take
the right hand fork. After a short easy off-road climb you will pass a new timber home and then continue off road through a
field on a well marked trail.
You now come to the pretty hamlet of Ballintean where you pick up a tarmac road and continue south.
This is a lovely easy ride amongst the trees with fantastic views of the Cairngorm mountains, through wooded areas and then back to
the river.
Continue South along a tarmac road until you come to Carnachuin and the memorial. There was an old bridge
on the left for continuing deeper into the glen on the other side, but it was washed away in September 09. Apparently it
will be replaced in the future.
Continue now off road as far as you can, passing a lovely turreted building and heading
out into the "wilds".
Further down this track is a good place for lunch. On your right you will see a tough climb heading
up into the hills. This is worth a diversion although we got beaten back by the wind & sideways rain, the temperature dropping
to 9C on August Bank Holiday Saturday!
Return the same way as you came.
Variation {1} : When you arrive at Ballintean (in
either direction) take the road west for a few hundred yards to Uath Lochans - nice place for a coffee stop. For something different,
leave your bikes and walk up to the viewpoints at the top and the crags above Uath Lochans - some amazing views.
Variation {2}
: If you haven't had enough with the distance of these rides, flirt onto some of the forest trails along the way for a bit - the Inshriach
Forest is full of biking trails.
Variation {3} : For those who like longer rides, start from Inverdruie car park - this will
add another 10 miles or so to the ride.
On the drive or ride back to Aviemore, as a special treat, call in for chocolate
cake and coffee at the Inshriach Nurseries, where a big surprise will await you (we won't spoil it).
