Tonal Effects | Biking Routes
In & around the Cairngorms
The Cairngorms area is simply the best place in the world and we aim to live there as soon as possible. There is so much biking (and walking) we've had to pick some of our favourites, with variations, to give you a good taster before you invent your own routes!  The nearby Glenlivet Estate alone boasts 80 miles of biking trails! Distances for these rides are difficult to work out because you can start at different points etc.  The best way we can do this is to offer the mileages as best we can and point out any rides that are tough ones, in terms of distance or terrain.  As with all our rides, we're not extremists so anyone should be able to do these half or full day rides.  A few of the rides in this section aren't in the Cairngorms & will require you to drive out to the start points, but they're within half an hour or so of Nethy Bridge or Aviemore. We will add more rides based from Braemar etc in the future.  We stay at Auchernack Farm between Grantown-on-Spey & Nethy Bridge - Sammie, Malcolm & family offer superb self-catering.
What do I need? Ordnance Survey Landranger Maps 35, 36, 42 & 43.
Steve Smirthwaite www.trailmaps.biz developed a series of superb Bikemaps (available in the Aviemore & Grantown on Spey Tourist Information Offices and Bothy Bikes, to name just 3 outlets or buy direct from his website). These are a collection of several sheets, each of which have several rides and variations.  In Sept 2007 Steve released a set of improved and updated versions - Strathspey Maps. They are well worth the money and very detailed indeed in terms of difficulty ratings and gradients. They are invaluable! In fact they'll make you want to come back as soon as possible to try some more routes!
Key: BM is for owners of the 7 "old" Bikemaps from Steve. SM is for the new range of 5 maps. Click here for full details.
Check with the Tourist Information Office and other outlets for more specific route maps too, some of which are mentioned on the following pages.
