This was supposed to be a big off-road & road loop starting from Dalwhinnie. However, the trail became so boggy at the time
that we were forced to turn back and so we have here a 16 mile there & back ride is superb scenery.
The route uses OS Map
42 although you can't get lost if you don't have this map.
The starting point for this ride is a small parking area just
past the railway station in Dalwhinnie. Now, you need to go through the gates and across the railway lineso take great care,
especially if you have children with you.
The trail is a wide forest/logging trail alongside Loch Ericht with magnificent views
down the loch. You will pass a couple of large buildings.
The road undulates in and out of the forest until you reach
Ben Alder Lodge. This is being beautifully restored and would look at home in the Bavarian or Swiss Alps. It's almost
fairy-tale, like Neuschwanstein castle.
From this point you climb up into open sceneray behind and above the lodge. Continue
along, admiring Ben Alder on your left.
You will come to Loch Pattack. If you want a detour, take the trail down from the loch,
across a ford and continue for a while on this trail.
Alternatively, carry on past Loch Pattack for as far as you want to.
Our objective
was to head to some waterfalls further along and then onto Loch Laggan, but it was seriously boggy in the spring.
Estate staff
assured us that it was achievable in better conditions, but sadly this was our turning point.
Return via the same route and enjoy.
